Auditor Galloway announces audit of Carroll County operations

06/24/2016

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway announced today that her office has launched a regularly scheduled audit of Carroll County, located in northwest Missouri. The county's most recent audit was released in May 2012 and received an overall performance rating of "good."

In 2012, auditors recommended additional internal controls to the property tax system to reduce the risk of misuse of funds. They found the county collector-treasurer, who collects tax payments, also had access rights in the system to change individual tax records. The county made adjustments in the system to increase safeguards. Auditors also determined the public administrator did not always file annual settlements in a timely manner or prepare bank reconciliations every month. A former public administrator also still had a number of cases in his possession, three years after leaving office. The sheriff's department lacked adequate accounting procedures and had deposited some funds into the Sheriff's Special Fund, rather than the county's General Revenue Fund, as required by law.

The complete 2012 report can be found online here. Auditors will review these and other areas in the current audit. Individuals with information for consideration related to the audit of Carroll County are invited to contact the State Auditor's Office at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or 800-347-8597.
