State Auditor's Show-Me Local Government Map increases transparency in taxing districts

Auditor Galloway highlights news transparency tool during Missouri Local Government Week

05/03/2016

In conjunction with Local Government Week, Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway unveiled a new online tool to increase transparency in government taxes and operations.

The Show-Me Local Government Map allows users to search by county and includes news and financial information, including property taxes rates, for taxing districts in Missouri.

"Transparency in government is an important part of serving citizens and fostering confidence in government at all levels," Auditor Galloway said. "Because of the large number and type of special taxing districts in Missouri, it can be difficult to find relevant, organized and up-to-date information on the taxing districts and tax rates that exist across the state. My office has developed this map as a new tool to provide transparency and access to this important information."

Missouri's 6,000 special taxing districts are made up of 30 different types of local government entities, including counties, cities, school districts and other special taxing districts like water, fire and ambulance protection districts.

Missouri's 2016 Local Government Week runs the first week of May and is coordinated by the Missouri Municipal League and partner organizations with a focus on the importance of local government and its service to citizens. The Show-Me Local Government Map is available online here.
