Levying Property Taxes In Excess of State Law

Missouri State Auditor Claire McCaskill has released a year-end report on Wednesday, December 29th, which may trouble many property tax payers in some parts of the state. The report contains more than 60 taxing jurisdictions which are levying a property tax rate in excess of what is allowed by state law under Missouri's Hancock Amendment. The State Auditor is troubled by not only the excess taxes being levied, but the apparent disregard many jurisdictions have for tax limits established by law. Each taxing jurisdiction is required to submit their tax rate for certification to the state auditor annually. Even after these excess rates were reviewed, and certification of the above amounts denied these taxing authorities continue to levy excess rates upon property taxpayers in their jurisdictions.

Copies of the report, No. 99-121, are available by contacting the State Auditor's Office at P.O. Box 869, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102; by calling (573) 751-4213; or by e-mail at moaudit@mail.auditor.state.mo.us.
