Auditor Galloway announces audit of Ste. Genevieve County

State Auditor will review past issues, look for new areas for improvement

01/18/2017

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway says her office is beginning a regularly scheduled audit of Ste. Genevieve County, located in Southeast Missouri. The county's most recent audit was released in 2013, and received an overall performance rating of fair.

"Government at all levels must be accountable to the people it serves. Every effort must be made to increase accountability to citizens, establish safeguards to decrease the risk of errors, and allow citizens to participate in the process," Auditor Galloway said. "My team will conduct a thorough review of Ste. Genevieve County operations, and I look forward to sharing any findings with the county's residents."

In the 2013 report, auditors found the Ste. Genevieve county collector had not properly reconciled the office's bank accounts, which resulted in questionable transfers and shortages. The audit also found the public administrator did not properly assess and collect fees from ward accounts, the county road and bridge department did not keep proper records of fuel purchases, and the county commission failed to abide by some aspects of the Missouri Sunshine Law.

These and other issues will be reviewed during the course of the audit. Individuals with information for consideration in the audit of Ste. Genevieve County may contact the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or 800-347-8597.
