Auditor Galloway meets with prosecutors on public corruption issues

Tour includes visits with prosecutors and community leaders in northeast Missouri to discuss public accountability and Whistleblower Hotline

07/25/2017

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway met with community leaders in northeast Missouri to discuss issues related to public accountability, including an ongoing effort to pass comprehensive legislation to hold public officials accountable for wrongdoing.

The State Auditor's tour included a stop in Palmyra, where she met with Marion County Prosecuting Attorney David Clayton. She also met with Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney Jacob Shellabarger in Mexico.

"As State Auditor, I often work with local law enforcement and prosecutors when fraud is discovered to ensure those who violate the public trust are held accountable," Auditor Galloway said. "Members of the law enforcement community and local prosecutors across the state are important partners in these efforts. My office will continue to support and assist in any way we can."

Auditor Galloway also met with representatives and stakeholders from the Northeast Missouri Electric Power Co-Op, including local leaders in the agriculture industry and small business communities.

The tour is part of an effort to gather input from local law enforcement, prosecutors and citizens about issues that are important to them. Galloway has pledged to continue working to increase penalties for public officials who steal public funds and use their positions to enrich themselves and others. During the previous legislative session, she worked with Sen. Bob Dixon, Rep. Joe Don McGaugh and the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys on related legislation. The provisions were included in a bill that was vetoed by the Governor earlier this month.

Auditor Galloway also highlighted information on the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline, a resource for individuals to anonymously share information on suspected waste, fraud or other inappropriate government activity, including misuse of public finances or resources.

Individuals may contact the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline by emailing moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or by calling 800-347-8597. Concerns may also be submitted anonymously online at auditor.mo.gov/hotline.
